Setting up data and personal hotspot on an iPhone

This articles explains how to set up data on your iPhone so you can access data even when you're away from Wi Fi. The article also covers how to set up "tethering" or "Hotspot" on your iPhone so you can share your iPhone's data connection with other devices.

To set up data on your iPhone

  • Click on Settings > General > Network
  • Check that “Enable 3G” is set to “On”
  • Check that "Cellular Data" is set to "On"
  • Click the ‘Home’ button
  • Hold down the power button (top of phone) & home button for a few seconds until the phone restarts.

Note: Your data speeds will vary depending on the signal strength and coverage. 
Carrier settings update often, so make sure you download the latest carrier settings on iTunes and keep your iPhone in sync.


To set up tethering, or Personal Hotspot on your iPhone

  • Click on Settings > General > Network
  • Check that “Personal Hotspot” is set to “On”

Note: Make sure you keep your Hotspot password secret. Whilst Hotspot is enabled it is very easy to use a lot of data in a short time. Make sure you keep an eye on your usage as you may be using data faster than the usage meter can update.
